Bernie Parent, the legendary Flyers goaltender died yesterday. He was 80 years old. Fans will remember and learn of his status, when he help lead the Flyers to two back to back Stanley Cups in the 1970’s It was the only two championships the team ever had.
Bernie was a member of the Flyers alumni and he would travel to different events, to meet fans. Unlike some athletes today, Bernie never charged for an autograph. From speaking to children in schools to public events like car shows, he was always available.
Even fans who were not alive during his days with the Flyers knew who he was . Chants of Bernie! Bernie! would erupt whenever he would go to the sports complex. Frequently, he would be hired by the Flyers to walk into the suites and hallways of the Spectrum or whatever the new area is called this week. It was there that he would say hello and pose for photos. Lines to meet him would be long.
Many years ago, Bernie was given the opportunity to be in the Mummers Parade, just ahead of the String Bands. That trip down South Broad Street brought cheers almost as loud as when he rode in an open convertible for the Stanley Cup Championship Parade.. Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
