Amazon Fresh To Close Area Stores

by Alex Lloyd Gross

Effective close of business on Saturday, January 31, 2026, the Amazon Fresh store located on the 1800 block of Street Road in Bensalem will close its doors for good. This location, along with others in the area, will no longer be operational. Store officials said that some of the locations may be rebranded as Whole Foods.

If they are not rebranded, the sites will sit vacant until landlords are able to secure new tenants. They will become eyesores. The Bensalem location underwent a very expensive transformation from a Kmart and, before that, a JM Fields. The building façade was dismantled and rebuilt, and high-capacity freezers were installed. In addition, kitchens for prepared foods had to be constructed. Custom shopping carts were ordered as well, costing upwards of $500.00 each. The store opened in August of 2024.

The Bensalem location did not have many customers walking through and making purchases. During the first week or so, the store was packed; after that, it became a ghost town. Two-tiered pricing was largely to blame. An item might sell for $8.00, but for Amazon Prime members, that same item might cost (for example) $6.00. Many people did not want to pay for an Amazon Prime membership, especially with two supermarkets just a mile down the street and a discount market less than a quarter mile away.

This loss means more than vacant real estate. It represents lost jobs—not only within the store itself, but also lost business for the truckers who delivered the food, the companies that printed the advertising, and local delivery services that bring food to people.
