UPDATE 4:30pm OFFICIALS CLAIM THAT THE TRAIN HAD 72 CARS IN TOTAL AND ABOUT 16 OF THEM DERAILED. THREE CARS CONTAINED HAZARDS AND NONE OF THEM IN PLACE LEAKED. EVACUATIONS AND SHELTER IN PLACE ORDERS HAVE BEEN LIFTED. THIS TRAIN WAS A CSX TRAIN.
A freight train has derailed in Bensalem Township, Bucks County. The train, which authorities said has about 16 cars derailed and train cars are strewn around the tracks like toys. No injuries were reported. At first, there was a concern that some of the cargo could be hazardous but that proved not to be the case.
The train derailed near the Neshaminy Falls Train Station and could be seen from Street Road. Several homes and businesses on Old Lincoln Highway were temporarily evacuated. Guests of the Penn Motel were seen on the property, while businesses just down the street were evacuated.
Streets were closed around the area, specifically Grove Avenue, Bristol Road past the Neshaminy Mall and ramps leading to those roads. The tracks were not used by passenger rail such as Amtrak or SEPTA. The wreckage will be there for an extended time until the investigation is done and a crane can be brought in to upright the cars. The West Trenton Line will not be running as those tracks are too close to the derailment, officials said.
