A New York man with a violent criminal past was sentenced Friday, May 30, 2025, to eight to 20 years in a state correctional facility for illegally possessing a firearm during a late-night welfare check at a Hilltown Township gas station.
Daniel Enrique Perez, 52, of Newburgh, New York, was convicted by a Bucks County jury in April 2025 on a charge of persons not to possess a firearm. Common Pleas Judge Stephen A. Corr imposed the sentence, which falls within the aggravated range of state sentencing guidelines.
The charges stemmed from an incident on November 26, 2023, when Hilltown Township Police were dispatched to the Sunoco gas station at 1501 Bethlehem Pike for a welfare check just after midnight. Officers arrived to find Perez unresponsive and in an altered state next to his vehicle at the fuel pump.

What began as a routine welfare check quickly turned into a serious felony arrest. Officers discovered a loaded Ruger pistol within the vehicle’s center dash, only inches from the gear shifter. According to trial testimony, bodycam footage captured Perez slurring his speech, struggling to produce identification, and drifting in and out of consciousness. The footage also recorded Perez admitting ownership of the weapon.
Further investigation revealed that Perez’s driver’s license was suspended. More significantly, his criminal history included a 1995 conviction in New York for attempted murder and robbery involving a firearm, making it illegal for him to possess any firearms.
“This conviction and sentence highlight the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office’s commitment to enforcing firearm laws and protecting the community,” prosecutors said.
The case was investigated by Hilltown Township Police Sgt. Timothy Murphy and Officer Deslyn Nurse, and was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Monica W. Furber.
