Kelechi J. Chibundu was convicted last week of third degree murder in the Tioga section of the city on January 11,2022. He was convicted by a jury after a trial, according to District Attorney Larry Krasner. He was also convicted of gun charges.

This all started when Kelechi J. Chibundu was arguing with a woman and he was intoxicated. A man named Melvin Hollimon. The argument was over whether the defendant could visit his children while he was intoxicated, authorities said. A fight happened between Chibundu and Hollimon, which Hollimon won. That did not sit well with Chibundu, so he returned with a gun.

Everyone saw the gun and tried to run away, but Hollimon was shot two times in his back, as he was running away and later died.

Investigators utilized video footage of the incident and a detailed description of the defendant, down to the spelling of his name, that was recorded by a 9-1-1 operator. This led to his arrest on January 25, 2022. The jury deliberated less than one day before delivering their verdict.

Chibundu is scheduled for sentencing before the Hon. Glenn Bronson on September 19, 2024.
