International Mail To Canada Is Now Prohibited
by Alex Lloyd Gross
In anticipation of the tariffs going to be enacted by Donald Trump, Canada has reacted just as you would expect therm to. They are going to put a tariff on goods and items going to Canada from the United States. They just have to figure out how much.
In the meantime, American Citizens are prohibited from sending mail to Canada. Just in time for the holidays. Children cannot send mail to their pen pal, friends and families cannot exchange gifts and small businesses are suffering greatly. Not even a birthday card can be shipped there. Ham radio and shortwave enthusiasts are not allowed to request station verification (QSL cards) as well.
While this may not be entirely due to the impending tariff there is a postal work stoppage in Canada which resulted in overseas mail being stopped. This could go on for hours, days, or even years, in a worst case scenario.
Items shipped before this “blockade” may get through if they have cleared customs and are en route to Canada. Items can sit in customs or be returned to the sender. Items that are stored for a long time may be subject to a tariff should it be implemented, before the work stoppage is over.
Americans are still permitted to visit Canada and bring those items across the border with them. However, that option is not feasible for 95 percent of the US population. Mail from Canada or Mexico to United States can be sent. That could change at a moments notice.
