Campaign For Working Families Offers Free Tax Service For Low and Moderate Income People
by Alex Lloyd Gross
The Campaign For Working Families has a food bank that helps tens of thousands of New Yorkers. Locally, they have a free tax filing service for low income people. Most tax preparers will charge an arm and a leg for a simple 1040 form. Millionaires can afford that with no problem. In fact, they are most probably doing much more than a simple 1040.
Not everyone has a huge net worth but they still have to pay taxes. Enter the Campaign For Working Families, which is doing this service for free to those in need in Philadelphia, South Jersey and counties surrounding Philadelphia ,
According to Dr.Eric Nzeribe, people go to the website, submit their info and within a few days they will hear back as to the status of their return. Last year, 30,000 people took advantage of this service, he said. All of the people doing the returns are properly trained.

This year, they have expanded into New York City. “We are thrilled to join forces with the Food Bank for New York City to bring critical tax services to communities that need them the most,” said Dr. Nikia Owens, President/ CEO of CWF. “With tax season approaching, our goal is to help as many individuals and families as possible take advantage of free, high-quality tax preparation, ensuring they are aware and receive the refunds and credits they are entitled to, which is especially beneficial during these inflationary times.”
Through this partnership, CWF will leverage its expertise in Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) programs to offer secure, IRS-certified tax preparation at no cost to eligible taxpayers. The initiative also will include:
- Expanded virtual tax preparation options to serve those unable to visit a site in person.
- Bilingual tax services to accommodate NYC’s diverse population.
- Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) services to assist taxpayers in resolving disputes with the IRS and
understanding their rights. - Community-based outreach in partnership with local nonprofits to increase accessibility.
