Police Warn Of A Sex Scam Designed To Scare You Into Paying Money
by Alex Lloyd Gross
Several press releases have recently been sent by different law enforcement agencies about scams that are designed to frighten and alarm people into sending money. They target people that may visit controversial or X rated web sites.
After a person visits a site, they may get an email telling them “We have secured your passwords and know you went to (insert site name here). We have also gained access to your webcam and saw what you did during those visits.

You have ( insert time here) to send us a certain amount of money in Bitcoin. If you do send it, our recording will be purged and never seen by anyone. If you ignore this email, we will distribute this video ( or images from it) to everyone in your contacts list. This includes your significant other, friends, family and co workers. You will be ruined. It’s nothing personal, it’s just business. Let this be a lesson to secure your computer better”.
The email is a complete waste of your time and is a scam, police say. Should you get a letter like this ( or one that just seeks money not to leak your camera roll to your address book), you should ignore it or report it to police. You should also block the sender as SPAM.

Unfortunately, police say many people fall victim to this scam and are mortified at what may happen should any images get posted publicly. As with any email asking your for money, you should not rush to comply. A scammer will create a sense of urgency to try to make you forget about common sense.
If in doubt, contact law enforcement or if the request for money is coming from a bank, simply call the main number to the bank ( NOT A NUMBER THAT IS ON THE EMAIL) to verify.
