UPDATE 5:30 pm

Tawhiid Miles, was taken into custody without incident and transported to the 15th District for further processing. He has been charged with Violations of the Uniform Firearms Act (VUFA), Possession of a Weapon on School Property, and VUFA on Public Streets. Original story is below.

It is an unfortunate sign of the times that students entering a public school have to go through metal detectors and have their belongings searched. One search today at Northeast High School uncovered a handgun that was hidden in a backpack belonging to a student, police said..

The incident happened just before 8:00 AM. No students were hurt . The student was 18 years old and is facing charges. police are not certain if he is going to be charged as an adult. Should that happen, his name and mug shot will be released, police said.

Since the early 2000’s it had become common for schools in Philadelphia to have metal detectors at the doors. police said this happened at the front door of the school.

  1. Indeed, times have changed a lot….. however not for the better.
The culture and overall attitudes of young society today has reached a new low.
Stupidity is at an all-time high.
Depending on “apps”, social media, is all the rage.

When I went to school, 1959 to 1971, we never had issues like this going on.
School shootings were not even thought of…. yet.
A couple of inches of snow didn’t cause a citywide shutdown of schools.
I trudged 5 blocks to kintergarden in galoshes through 8 inches of snow…. alone, no parent needed to protect me from some sicko creep abducting me.

    Yeah, times have changed.

    1. Agreed, as far as school closings, we trudged to school. More children are now being bussed to school. We didn’t take a bus to school until HS and it was SEPTA (PTC?)

      1. Dianne, I was lucky to be able to walk to school.
Sullivan elementary, Harding JH, and Frankford HS.
Back then it wasn’t dangerous to do that, and was good excersize to walk anyway.
But NOW, my old neighborhood (Frankford/Wissonoming) has turned ghetto and dangerous.
The homes are all run-down slop messes, so are the streets.
Shootings and violence happen right around where my parents house is, but thank god they’re long gone and haven’t seen what happened to their neighborhood.
Mom would roll over in her grave, and surely scream at the prices of eggs, bacon, and foods.

        Times change, yep.

  2. Check George Washington High School. Kids are leaving doors propped open for others to sneak in weapons. Have someone check. I’ve reported it to the Administration at my local school but they just shrug their shoulders and say, “Oh, well!”
