Fire Damages Row Homes In Kensington Area

by Alex Lloyd Gross

Just after 5:30 PM thick grey smoke could be seen from most areas of the city. The source of that smoke was a fire that ripped through one town home and damaged two others, on the 800 block of East Ontario Street.

Fire crews brought in extra equipment but narrow streets hindered the firefighting efforts by limiting just how much equipment could get close to the fire. To top it off, a few idiots turned on a fire hydrant to keep cool, just two blocks from the blaze.

The cause is under investigation. The fie was declared under control in about 20 minutes. There were no injuries reported. Fire companies from Frankford and Port Richmond were called in to assist.

Always a sad thing when homes are destroyed due to fires.
But notice that whenever a fire breaks out, the news stories only say “the CAUSE of the fire is being investigated”.
And that’s usually the end of it, rarely do you ever see the reason for the fire.
Maybe a mention of a child playing with matches or candles, Maybe a space heater too close to a bed…..

But a long-time fireman once told me that the reason the news doesn’t want the public to know details of how some the fires happen is this….
In certain areas prone to fires in the city, the cause is likely due to the people living in the home jury-rigging the gas or electrical connections because they don’t pay their utility bills.
He told me he’s seen car jumper cables tapped onto meter boxes, garden hoses rigged on gas lines, and sloppy dangerous repairs on outlets and lighting and fuse boxes.
He also told me that these people are usually on welfare, or just trying to cheat the utility company out of money.
And he said that the reason to omit those facts is to keep the public from becoming wary of “those individuals” who we all seem to know are troublsome within society.
