Male In Bensalem Police Shooting Identified As Levittown Resident

John Thomas Mathis, 44, of Levittown,  is no stranger to local police. He has a criminal record a mile long for such charges as An aggravated assault while DUI case in Bristol Township pending a trial date. Pending sentencings for receiving stolen property from a phone store in Bristol Borough, receiving stolen property from a truck in Lower Southampton, and a fleeing incident in Middletown. Two open state violation cases for theft by unlawful taking and retail theft. After he pleaded guilty in the Bristol Borough case in July 2023, Bucks County prosecutors asked for his bail to be revoked, and a judge approved the request. However, in May 2025, another judge placed Mathis on pre-trial supervision with GPS monitoring on all the open matters, despite the District Attorney’s objections.

Now he can add charges from the Bensalem road rage incident to that list, as he was identified as the male who allegedly rammed a Bensalem Police car with his motorcycle and pointed a gun at police . Mathis is still in the hospital, suffering from wounds to his left shoulder blade area and one to his right armpit area. He remains in stable condition.

While Mathis was on supervised release pending his other court cases, he is alleged to have cut off the ankle monitor. He was also wanted by Bristol Township Police for causing two different crashes and then grabbing a baseball bat and hitting a car with it.

In the Bensalem incident on August 2, he was on a motorcycle going north on Bristol Pike when he allegedly threatened another motorist with a gun. When police tried to stop him, he skidded his motorcycle into the police car and then ran away, allegedly pointing a pistol in the direction of police, when he was shot.

The officer that fired his gun has been put on administrative lead, until the shooting is reviewed by the District Attorney.
