by Alex Lloyd Gross

Held over the Labor Day weekend at the Moravian Tile Works property in Central Bucks County, the return of the Renaissance Faire is happening this weekend. There is lots to see and do. You can try your hand at archery, it is harder than it looks. You can have a sword fight with a knight and according to the organizers, the knight does not always win,

You can get free lessons on how to crack a whip or you can go inside the tile works to watch ceramic tile get made. As for food, plenty of things to chose from, BBQ ribs, to french fry buckets or you can partake in alcoholic beverage if you are of age.

This is a way to get away from smartphones and the world of social media. A lot of vendors and some guests dress in period clothing. You can purchase your own at the venue and change into it if you so choose.

One interesting demonstration was held on the main grounds, where people watch and learn about sword fighting from different time periods. Contrary to Hollywood, sword fights were not long and drawn out. They were usually quick. In the early days, priests, and monks used to fight and women were also fighting as well. Each time period has different techniques and weapons.

Parking is at the Doylestown garage and shuttles are free. People come from allover the region to this event, Some of the vendors camp here and some guest grab a cheap motel.

Walking through the tileworks is an experience but for the second level, there is no elevator, just a stone staircase that must be navigated slowly. There is a ton of things to see do and buy. Some things can cost a few dollars. Elaborate crafts can set you back a few hundred. Every so often, there are exhibits that feature entertainers which were a delight to those that watched.
