As firefighters raced to the a house on fire today, October 26, 2017  on the 4700 block of Meridian Street, they were met with a huge column of smoke from blocks away. They knew the fire would be raging when they arrived.  from the front of the structure,  only smoke was visible. However, around the rear of the house, was a different story. Heavy flames hindered efforts and pockets of fire kept firefighters from bringing it under control for at least one hour after the first report about 9:30 AM..

When it was declared under control, firefighters made another comprehensive search, where they found a woman. She was burned and had smoke inhalation. Sources said that she was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition. Her identity was not yet released.  The Fire Marshal was on the scene attempting to find out  the cause.  There were no other injuries reported.  Local streets like Torresdale Avenue were closed around the fire .
