Portal To The World Stops In Philly

It has been described at “neat, cool and awesome”. It is a giant live screen that shows people in different cities to people in front of it, and it’s at LOVE Park in center city Philadelphia. People can spend time, just watching the signs and seeing how people interact with those around the world.

There are portals in Poland, Lithuania and Ireland. The giant circular screen has a camera built in and beams images from Philadelphia to other cities.

At times it’s boring, as there are no people on the other side. When people show up and stay a bit, that’s where the fun is. Philadelphians will make hand signals and have those signals returned by total strangers. Most people are waving, or giving thumbs up. A few make hearts with their hands.

The portal was in New York for a short while , until New Yorker’s started to make vulgar gestures towards other people.

It’s free and fun. For those folks that like people watching, it’s really off the hook. Especially if people on the other side show up with their pets or drive up in a car. Some people will take signs and display them to the people on the other side of the world.

  1. With the invention of the TV set in the 1930’s, people became glued to its hypnotic powers. – god forbid they miss an episode of “I Love Lucy” or “General Hospital”.
    Visuals, capturing human eyes.
Then, to enhance the lure, and the magic, Color TV was born in the 1950’s.
The TV sets eventually became portable, some were handheld marvels, for convenience.
And don’t forget the invention of VCRs, then DVDs, adding to the mix.

Along comes cellphones, with their plethora of “apps”.
People forever trained and glued to those tiny “screens” for just about everything.

That new “Portal” is just another “glue” to keep people amazed.
Like we need to look at yet another screen in an attempt to jazz up our own lives.

“Keeping people amused and occupied helps in controlling them, while the real world around them deteriorates.”

At least I know where the “off button” is, so I can get back to reality.
