US Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero said that Nateirah Ortiz, 25, of Upper Darby, will be spending the next eight years in the federal prison system for stealing a vehicle from a man at gunpoint in South Philly on January 31, 2024. This carjacking happened on the 1100 block of Washington Avenue , as the victim was walking to his car. Ortiz ran up to him with a gun and demanded his keys.

Ortiz was then spotted driving the car on Kensington Avenue a few hours later and police initiated a car stop. She did stop, waited for officers to exit their cars and then sped off. She almost hit police cars when she did this maneuver, police said. Officers then spotted Ortiz on Richmond Street , walking away from the now crashed stolen vehicle. She tossed a fully loaded gun under a nearby parked vehicle.

Ortiz entered a guilty plea and admitted to using the gun during the carjacking. Armed carjacking is a federal crime. Ortiz could face state charges as well for this incident.

“Gunpoint carjackings are terrifying for victims and unsettling for the entire community,” said U.S. Attorney Romero. “That’s why this office will continue to work hand-in-hand with the Philadelphia Police Department and ATF to prosecute these violent offenders. As Nateirah Ortiz’s sentence shows, committing a carjacking in our city is a life-changing decision. A crime that took just moments will land you in prison for years.”
