Kensington High School Temporarily Closed Students Will Attend School In Mayfair
by Alex Lloyd Gross
August 24, 2026, is the first day back for all Philadelphia Public Schools.
Due to asbestos removal at Kensington High School, the building is closed, at least until January. Students and staff will go to the Austin Meehan Middle School building, which is about a block away from Lincoln High School.
There is already a sign outside the building. Students who already take a yellow school bus will have shuttle bus service. Teachers must find their own way to the new school, district officials said.
Of course, there are concerns that having two rival schools next to each other could pose a problem or two. School District officials said they have a safety plan in effect. Extra police have already been assigned to the area.
For people who may have questions or concerns about this, there are four meetings scheduled:
- In-person family meeting: Tuesday, Aug. 18, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Kensington CAPA
- Virtual option: Wednesday, Aug. 19, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
- KHS Open House: Friday, Aug. 21, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Austin Meehan
- KHS Open House: Saturday, Aug. 22, from 10:00 a.m. to noon at Austin Meehan
