Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross announced the arrested and firing of 10 year veteran officer Antonio Mayhew.   “It’s one of the most irresponsible things I’ve every heard of”, Ross said. Mayhew is accused of leaving  his patrol assignment in South Philadelphia and driving to  the 5200 block of Market Street. It was there, at 1:45 AM, he became involved in an argument with his wife. The argument got heated and he is alleged to have punched her in the head.

His wife drove off in their car  with him in pursuit.  With lights and sirens, he followed her about two miles, when his wife was involved in a serious car accident with another, innocent driver. Presumably, with his family vehicle. Mayhew is accused to stopping and telling the other driver he would return.  He never did. Instead, he hightailed it back to South Philadelphia to finish out his tour of duty.

The other driver sustained serious injuries.  Most of the incident was caught on security cameras and bystanders also provided cops key information.  Mayhew was arrested and is being charged with assault, misapplication of entrusted property, official oppression and other charges. He is suspended for 30 days and  then will be fired. It was learned that Mayhew previously had a protection from abuse order four years ago. It is unclear who that victim is or their relationship to Mayhew.
