Maurice Hill was trying to sell the jury that he acted in self defense, in August 2019 when he opened fire on police who were serving a warrant inside his home. The jury was not buying what he was selling and found him guilty of nine counts of aggravated assault, nine counts of assault of a law enforcement officer, endangering two people trapped inside the home, causing catastrophe, and two firearms charges. The verdict was returned late yesterday.

Hill faces decades in prison. Hill called on District Attorney Larry Krasner during the stand off to negoitate with him Krasner did speak with him and promised him he would be treated fairly. “I gave him a phoney baloney,” the District Attorney later said. Hill was hoping to get no more than 20 years in prison.

The defense that Hill was peddling was that he was afraid and confused. He thought the police were invaders. He thought his house was being broken into, so he fired countless rounds at officers. One of those shots struck police officer Shaun Parker in the head, inches above the ear, he testified. Officer Michael Guinter was struck in both of his arms and testified he has numbness from the incident.
Hill’s house was surrounded by marked police cars when he was thought to be “invaded”.

Hill did catch a small break when the jury returned not guilty verdicts on three counts of aggravated assault and three counts of assault of a law enforcement officer.
