Officers from the 24th District held a free block party yesterday along Allegheny Avenue that drew several thousands of people in the community. The street , from Jasper through Kensington Avenue was closed to traffic while children and adults had fun.

The event featured face painting and temporary tattoos given out by police. Free food, such as hamburgers, hot dogs, were cooked on a grill in a parking lot. Officers that were off duty showed up to cook the food and held with the bounce houses that were erected.

This event is usually held on Somerset Avenue but this year, it got a bit bigger for America’s 250th Birthday. Along the sidewalk, city agencies and businesses had a community outreach area, with tables set up to give free information to people as well as promotional swag. From PECO, giving out information on rebates for new appliances to elected officials setting up informational tables.

The all weather event went off without a hitch, but high winds kept some of the bounce houses from being set up for a bit. When it was over, children ( and adults) in the community had fun and got fed.

  1. Kensington needs more of these positive thinking events to improve the harmony of that neighborhood.
Because Kensington has traditionally been a crime center for drugs and other negative things.
I know, because I briefly lived down there decades ago, however it’s gotten worse in recent times.
Lift the spirits of the citizens with these nice events!
