Street Road will be closed to traffic for the next several hours, after the township fire truck was struck by an Amazon delivery contractor.  The accident happened just after 10:30 AM, when for unknown reasons, the driver of the delivery truck turned head on into the fire truck. The accident happened on the 2300 block of Street Road, near Popeyes.

The driver was trapped for a brief time, as heroic firefighters  shrugged off their own injuries and jumped out of their firetruck to free the trapped Amazon driver.  According to Bill McVey, Director of Public Safety for the township, “The driver is very critical. I have no idea why he turned into the fire truck,” he said at the scene.

Amazon workers said that the driver had no deliveries in Bensalem and did not know why he turned into the truck.  Police will look at phone records to see if distracted driving was the cause.

Two firemen, inside the engine were transported by medics to Jefferson Hospital, Torresdale Division for non life threatening injuries.  Drivers trying to get to a business on Street Road will be accommodated, but they may have to walk a bit, officials said. The firetruck sustained crippling damage and most likely will have to be replaced.

Officials did not say if the fire crews were responding to a call or just driving.
